Sydney's New Year's Eve fireworks to be intergalactic: Reg Mombassa

Sydney Harbour Bridge will put on its biggest midnight display yet when more than a billion people cast their eyes to the harbour city on New Year's Eve.

But artist and musician Reg Mombassa, the event's creative ambassador, said its logo of an "all-seeing eye" was not a hint that crowds might see one staring back.

"If I gave the slightest bit of information away I'd be locked up for treason," the Mambo artist and Mental As Anything rocker said.

What was revealed on Monday was news that the much-anticipated bridge effect, thanks to 16 kilometres of rope light, will be twice as big as previous years – stretching 12 storeys high and 72 metres wide.

Mombassa, who confirmed that this New Year's Eve would be his first work in pyrotechnics, said he was reliably informed Sydney's display would stand out.

"Apparently the fireworks, the Sydney fireworks, are actually visible from the closest galactic supercluster, the Virgo Supercluster, which is 65 million light years from earth.

So there will be some insect-faced aliens enjoying the fireworks display, which is nice to know," Mombassa said.

"Unfortunately the pathetic displays from the other cities won't be visible from that distance.”


Also joining the party will be the Sydney Opera House, which will launch more than 1000 fireworks from its sails as it marks its 40th birthday.

It is the first time the world famous building has been incorporated into the fireworks display in more than a decade, using specially developed pyrotechnics that will not damage its exterior.

Sydney's lord mayor Clover Moore said the $6.8 million fireworks display was the city's gift to Sydney.

About 1.5 million people are expected at the harbour and another 1.1 billion will watch a broadcast of the harbourside festivities, Cr Moore said.

“We are marking the 40th anniversary of Sydney Opera House in the best way that Sydney NYE knows how – brilliant, specially-designed fireworks, firing from the world-famous sails," Cr Moore said.

"I expect this year's event to have one of the most creative fireworks displays Sydney has seen.”

Fortunato Foti, now in his 14th year as the director of the fireworks, said this year was again a challenge to create a display bigger than in previous years.

"Inspiration for this year's fireworks display has been taken from Reg Mombassa's work which, as always, is very colourful and unique. It's been a challenge pulling it together, but I think the crowds will be impressed on the night," Mr Foti said.

And revellers will also have the chance to take home more than photos and memories, for $120.

In an Australian first, a collector's coin featuring a coloured hologram depicting the bridge effect, will be available for sale.

Unstoppable Kylie Comes Home and Embraces Sydney

IF we were just counting down Kylie Minogue's greatest hits it would probably take all New Year's night. 

There's her 25 years in the music industry, the odd concert or two for the Queen's Jubilee, an Abbey Road Sessions album and a starring role in French indie film Holy Motors. So "coming home" to play host and creative ambassador for Sydney's NYE party will be the sparkling finish to 2012 this unstoppable diva deserves.

Charged with hitting the button on the fireworks, Minogue says the spectacular is the perfect end to a personal year of highs.

"It's been a huge year for me and the finish line is New Year's Eve and I will definitely be trying to find a moment in the madness to really appreciate everything I've done this year and what an amazing year it's been to share with fans," she said.

The 44-year-old has vowed to take the "embrace" theme literally, planning a midnight hug with model boyfriend Andre Velencoso, who has flown in to share in the festivities.

She has posted several photos on Twitter since arriving in Sydney on Friday, including a visit to Bondi's Icebergs. She said she has been spruiking her role since agreeing to the gig.

"Honestly, I've been so excited about coming home since I first signed up for the project which was a year ago, so here I am, and now it's a reality and it's so exciting," she said.

Channel 9's coverage, from the Lord Mayor's party at the Sydney Opera House, starts at 8.30pm (family fireworks) and includes 11.30pm (midnight countdown) with performances by Ricki-Lee Coulter and Darren Percival.

A Kylie Exciting New Year for Sydney

Global superstar Kylie Minogue will fly into Sydney next week to take part in the city’s official New Year’s Eve (NYE) celebrations.

The Australian-born singer, songwriter, actress and fashion icon will see out the final moments of ‘K25’ – her year-long celebration marking 25 years in the music business – right here in Sydney, where she will lead the countdown into the Midnight Fireworks Spectacular.

Ms Minogue has enjoyed a close association with the Harbour City this year, visiting Sydney several times and working as the Creative Ambassador for the City of Sydney Council’s NYE festivities.
The role has seen the ARIA, BRIT and Grammy award-winner work with the City’s production team to develop the event’s theme “Embrace” and its logos, street banners, musical soundtrack and fireworks display.

The Creative Ambassador role is one of a number of Sydney-based initiatives for Kylie this year.
In March, the pop icon took part in Sydney Mardi Gras, appearing at the event’s famous street parade and performing a half-hour set of her hits at the after-party.

Sydney was one of just four cities visited this year by Ms Minogue’s Anti Tour, the others being Melbourne, London and Manchester.

The tour saw Kylie perform a selection of rare tracks, demos, b-sides and previously unreleased material in an intimate, pared-back setting at Luna Park’s Big Top.

The shows were conceived as a counterpoint to the singer’s highly technical, big-budget Aphrodite Les Folies tour of 2011, which encompassed 77 concerts in 50 cities, including three shows at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

Speaking about her role in Sydney’s NYE festivities, Ms Minogue said in a statement: “This year I want everyone to embrace during the fireworks.

“Whether it’s embracing new ideas, change and opportunities, or just giving a big hug to your family and friends, it’s something everyone can get involved in.”

‘Fireworks’ From a Million Phones to Light up 2012 Sydney New Year’s Eve

Kylie Minogue and the City of Sydney are encouraging more than one million people on the harbour for Sydney New Year’s Eve to take part in a world-first NYE interactive colour light show.

The City and Telstra have developed a free smartphone app that will light up phone screens as coloured lights splash the Sydney Harbour Bridge to mark the end of 2012 and launch of 2013.

The synchronised Telstra Colour Moments – at 10.15pm, 11pm, 11.30pm and 11.45pm – will build excitement as the clock ticks closer to midnight, and app users will be reminded to hold their phones to the sky to be part of the celebration, as the harbour is transformed into a sea of colour.

NYE12 Creative Ambassador Kylie Minogue has worked with the City and Imagination Australia, and chosen magenta, yellow, purple and blue for the Telstra Colour Moments and fireworks, representing her Embrace theme.

“This year I want everyone to embrace during the fireworks,” Kylie said.

“Whether it’s embracing new ideas, change and opportunities, or just giving a big hug to your family and friends, it’s something everyone can get involved in. So together, we are going to make this New Year’s Eve the most memorable night ever.”

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said she was looking forward to the harbour foreshore filling with colour and excitement on New Year’s Eve.

“If you are going to watch the fireworks from one of the many vantage points around Sydney Harbour, plan ahead and download this free phone app,” the Lord Mayor said.

“The app lets you take part in the biggest interactive light show on Sydney Harbour – we hope it might even set a new Australian record for audience participation.

“The app will have useful information, including vantage point maps and updates about when different locations have reached capacity, as well as news feeds to keep up-to-date on the latest developments.”

The Lord Mayor said this year’s NYE charity partner, The Fred Hollows Foundation, was particularly appropriate as they have spent 20 years restoring the sight of millions of people around the world.

“The Fred Hollows Foundation does inspiring work. Over the past two decades they have given countless people back their sight,” the Lord Mayor said.

“For $25 you can restore someone’s vision and let them see their family and friends as we all begin a new year.”

Kylie Minogue worked with the City and Imagination Australia to develop the theme, colour scheme and music for NYE12, and said Embrace was a “wonderfully inclusive theme” that was close to her heart.

“Embrace is all about acceptance, tolerance, fun and, above all, love,” Kylie said.

“In a city of great diversity we come together at New Year’s Eve to embrace the future and celebrate all that we are and the potential that tomorrow holds.

“It’s also about that magical moment at midnight when we throw our arms around the people we love and express our happiness.”

Kylie’s theme is represented by the Embrace icon ─ a swirl of coloured sails in magenta, yellow, purple and red, which is marked with her signature K.

Embrace also has four subthemes: Embrace Love, Embrace Sydney, Embrace the Possibility and Embrace the Moment, which are Kylie’s most important things to hold onto during 2012 Sydney New Year’s Eve.

The Telstra Colour Moments:

10.15pm: The magenta colour moment will represent the Embrace Love subtheme and will be accompanied by a firework shaped like a heart.

11pm: It will be followed by the yellow colour moment, Embrace Sydney, which will see a firework shaped like a sun shimmer over the city.

11.30pm: The Embrace the Possibility colour moment will be accompanied by a butterfly taking flight from Sydney Harbour Bridge and morphing into a purple firework.

11.45pm: The final Embrace the Moment effect will see a huge aquamarine starburst firework light up the night, building anticipation for the 12-minute Midnight Fireworks display.

Apart from the interactive light show, the app will also allow people to ‘Message the Bridge’ by submitting some words, which could be projected onto one of the Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons.

Telstra is also offering a free ‘Midnight Messages’ service, during which app users can send up to 50 ‘Happy New Year’ text messages to their family and friends.

App users simply need to upload their messages before 6pm on Monday 31 December, and the texts will be automatically sent at midnight.

New Years Eve Goes Off with a Bang in Sydney

Sydney celebrated another successful New Year’s Eve event. Fireworks thundered, cracked, and lit up the night skies as an estimated 1.5 million people gathered on the Sydney Harbour Foreshore to welcome in 2012.

Estimates suggest one billion people around the world see the Sydney New Year’s Eve Midnight Fireworks and Bridge Effect, and previous research has found that Sydney New Year’s Eve contributes $156 million to the local economy.

The NSW Government is a major investor and contributor to Sydney’s New Year’s celebrations. DNSW invests in international media broadcasts and works closely with City of Sydney to ensure the event’s success.

The 2011 event’s Creative Director, Marc Newson presented the City of Sydney’s theme Time to Dream, representing hope and aspirations. More than 1,000 accredited personnel and an additional 300 volunteers worked on the night to ensure the success of the event and work has already begun on 2012 festivities.

Summer Temperatures finally arrive to greet Sydney's New Year's Eve revellers

IT was like a changing of the guard at Sydney's beaches. Party stragglers looking a little worse for wear eventually made way for sun-lovers eager to make the most of the spectacular weather the city put on to kick off the New Year yesterday.

The story was the same all along the coast as families and tourists did their best to forget the rainy end to 2011 by lapping up the warm weather and clear skies that are expected to continue for the most of the week.

Those not up for a swim still made the most of the outdoors, with some gathering friends and families for BBQs at home and others finding a sunny beer garden in which to enjoy a relaxing lunch.

Watson's Bay Hotel general manager Justin Carroll said yesterday was the busiest since last January.

"It's really busy, it's been fantastic and it took us a little by surprise actually," he said. "I think with all the rain we have had lately people were really in a mood to get out and enjoy the perfect weather."

It was the same on the northern beaches, with the popular Newport Arms Hotel packed with families enjoying the water views and those recovering from the night before.

Meanwhile, in what has become a New Year's Day tradition, thousands of music fans made their way to the Domain for Field Day.

The festival played host to an international array of electronic music artists, including US DJ Moby, to kick off 2012 with a bang.

"It was the best Field Day yet and we are extremely pleased with the event," promoter Jon Wall gushed.

Dana Creedon, 20, and her friends have been every year since they were 18. They just can't say no to the good weather and the crowd.

"It's just the vibe you get," Ms Creedon said.

Echoing her sentiments was Paris Forscutt, 21: "Every year is a good year at Field Day."

The city's usual major attractions were also popular, with families determined to make the most of the sunny long weekend.

Taronga spokesman Mark Williams said the zoo had enjoyed good attendance figures over the past week and yesterday's perfect weather only helped that trend continue.

"This time of year is always a busy time for us and the weather meant that New Year's Day was no different," he said.

Sydney's day of relaxation came after Saturday's New Year's Eve celebrations were declared a virtually trouble-free success.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the partygoers who made their way into the city to welcome in the New Year were overwhelmingly well behaved.

More than a million people gathered around the harbour foreshore to usher in 2012, but only 57 arrests were made. "Police said it was quieter than most Saturday nights," Ms Moore said.

"You think about what it's like sometimes in Kings Cross or George St on your average Saturday night, that was amazing."

About 11.30pm, police and paramedics responded to reports of a male aged in his early 20s who had impaled his left thigh after attempting to jump a fence in the Botanic Gardens.

Ms Moore defended the $6.3 million cost of the fireworks display, saying it equated to $4 for every person who watched the event around the Harbour, and the fireworks generated $156 million for the local economy.

Australia on New Year's Eve: How Aussies Will Boogie Down, Down Under

New Years Eve plans don't have to include ways to stay warm while singing Auld Lang Syne, or fighting for a cab in a snowstorm. it's summer down under in Australia! And some time spent with friends and family on a beach or dining alfresco while watching a fireworks display of Olympic proportions can surely be on your December 31st agenda.

Australia is one of the first countries to ring in the new year. Each city center hosts a myriad of events showcasing the individuality of each region, while drawing domestic and international visitors alike.

Please make sure you leave the fireworks to the professionals, however, as they are illegal throughout the country. Here's what's going on, plus our own tips for what to go if you find yourself in Australia this weekend:

Sydney:

Offering one of the most world-famous fireworks shows on the planet, Sydney puts on an event to remember. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is the epicenter for the fireworks that not only reflect off the water, but cast a rainbow of light onto the iconic Opera House's white tiles. Our recommendation is to join the boats in the harbor for some unobstructed views of the pyrotechnics. Taronga Zoo, on the opposite side of the water, also offers some of the best firework views coupled with a meal and cocktail party.

Away from the city, Bondi Beach is host to a giant beach party called "Shore Thing." This all-night shindig attracts live musical acts and gives open-air partygoers the opportunity to watch the first dawn of 2012.

Melbourne:

Australia's second largest city, not to mention cultural capital, Melbourne hosts a number of events. With a casino and hotel as extravagant as many Vegas outposts, Crown would make a perfect river-side location to watch the firework show which uses the buildings' skyline as the backdrop to a colorful evening.

Our recommendation is to head out of the city towards the shores of St. Kilda. This bayside suburb offers beautiful views of the ocean and the city, with only a fraction of the crowds. Have a beautiful dinner at Stokehouse on the water, watching the fireworks display from afar.

Brisbane:

Utilizing a handful of bridges that cross the city, Bris-Vegas offers fireworks with various hot spots. Any views of the Storey Bridge will be perfect for catching the contained explosions. Or spend the day at the inland beach of Southbank, catching rays, and when the sun goes down, cross the river to Powerhouse. On the banks of the river, surrounded by New Farm Park, this vintage electric power house is now home to a handful of theaters, a few eateries and a bar.

Perth:

Located on the west coast, Perth offers a good amount of low key and high energy fun. For fireworks, head to the foreshore of the Swan River in East Perth. Or count down the last minutes of 2011 on the historical Town Hall clock while listening to live music and sampling any one of a number of boutique beers. Our recommendation goes to Sail & Anchor, for its 42 local brews on tap.

Since the summer is just getting hot in most of the country, any celebration outdoors would be most appropriate. If you want to be truly Aussie, grab some kangaroo sausages, called "kanga bangas," a few beers and head down to the beach with a few mates. Whatever your desire, or location, please celebrate responsibly.

Sydney Harbour and its foreshores promise for a great night with fantastic views and endless entertainment.

Make sure you get the picnic rug out early though to fight the crowds and secure your spot in time for the pre show entertainment starting at 5pm.

With aerial displays from Matt Hall at 6pm, followed by the Ted Noffs fire tug water show at 7pm, the night will be off to a great start.

At 8pm the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Smoking Ceremony will commence, with the Silver Spray, Tribal Warrior and Mari Nawi vessls cleansing the harbour of negative spirits, before concluding with daytime pyrotechnics and traditional eucalyptus smoke. Sydney Parties On into 2011 - New years Eve Fireworks in Sydney

New Year’s Eve 2010 was the biggest celebration in Sydney since the 2000 Olympics.

For the first time in over a decade, the city’s hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars experienced a huge increase in business with most of them booked to capacity.

Despite constant reports of rising electricity and water bills, potential interest rate hikes and an increase to rents causing most Australians to rein in their discretionary spending, Sydney was awash with revelers splurging like there was no tomorrow.

Metro Hotels Chief Operating Office and Australian Hotels Association NSW Division board member, Mr George Bedwani reported that occupancy and average rates for hotels were higher than previous New Years periods and higher than those recorded during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

“The city was full of local, interstate and international visitors for the recent New Years festivities,” reported Mr Bedwani. “And it looks like this trend will continue over the coming months.” He said.

Fresh off the immense hype caused by “Oprah fever” and the smorgasbord of concerts by national and international artists, Sydney will continue to enjoy a very buoyant first quarter of the 2011 calendar year with the final Ashes Cricket Test and the reknowned Sydney Festival drawing tens of thousands of domestic and international tourists to Sydney during January.
